SfN Members Advocate for Research Funding on Capitol Hill Day
As part of SfN’s 12th annual Capitol Hill Day, more than 50 SfN members traveled to Capitol Hill March 8 to promote increased investment in scientific research. Emphasizing that America thrives through federal investment in research, advocates spoke with 93 congressional offices throughout the day, including meetings with Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), Rep. John Culberson (R-TX), Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX), Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-KS), Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA), and Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA).
The full-day event was kicked off by SfN President Richard Huganir who presented Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) and Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) with the Public Advocacy Award in recognition of their contributions to advancing the field of neuroscience by serving as champions for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Congress. Their acceptance waslive-streamed on Facebook.
Capitol Hill Day generated a social media buzz including shout-outs from Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), thanking neuroscience researchers for being at the forefront of discovery, and Sen. Roy Blunt. In total, #SfNHillDay was used in more than 650 social posts and #NeuroAdvocate was tagged in more than 260 posts.
