Science Biography
Mar Sanchez is a Professor in the Dept. of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Emory University School of Medicine and Core Scientist and Chief of the Division of Developmental and Cognitive Neuroscience, Emory National Primate Research Center, Emory University.
Dr. Sanchez received her Ph.D. in Neurobiology and Cell Biology from the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain and has expertise in stress neurobiology, and behavioral and developmental neuroscience.
The goal of her research program is to understand the neurobiology of stress and emotional regulation, and how early experiences affect its development. She uses nonhuman primate (NHP) models of early life adversity/stress (ELA/ELS) of translational relevance to human developmental psychopathology to understand how ELA/ELS affect the development of stress/emotion and reward brain circuits, leading to increased risk to psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety, depression and drug addiction.
Dr. Sanchez’s translational research bridges different disciplines and strong collaborations with clinical and basic researchers studying human developmental psychopathology, longitudinal brain MRI development, behavioral genetics/epigenetics and psychoneuroimmunology.
