In the “publish or perish” paradigm, where, when, and how scientists publish their results can have serious impacts on the future of their research and careers. As new journals are created, publishing models evolve and diversify, and new performance metrics emerge, the decision on where or how to publish, or how to judge a scientist's output, becomes even more complicated. This session will discuss common ways researchers and articles are evaluated in hiring, promotion, and funding decisions, including impact factor, h-index, and other bibliometrics, as well as some emerging alternatives. An interactive panel discussion and Q&A will follow.
