Responsible Conduct of Research Short Course: The Responsibility of Being Transparent: Science Communication, Sharing, and Publishing

Open and transparent sharing of experimental methods, data, and scientific findings is integral to fostering a scientific environment where researchers work together and promote public confidence in scientific knowledge. This short course will cover main topics related to science communication, delivered by experts, and include small group discussions of real case scenarios. Subtopics include: considerations of authorship and journal selection, implications of generative artificial intelligence for science writing, the importance of open data sharing for rigor and reproducibility, responsible conduct of peer review, and presenting science to lay audiences.

Brain Awareness Campaign Event

Attend a celebration of neuroscience outreach efforts at the Brain Awareness Campaign Event. Meet with other outreach groups and share ideas on how to best connect with public audiences. Also, hear from Anita Randolph, PhD, who will discuss how science outreach benefits both communities and researchers.

Early Career Poster Session

Join a special poster session and networking event featuring early career participants from various diversity programs, including the Neuroscience Scholars Program (NSP), the Early Career Policy Ambassadors (ECPA), the Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (FUN), international partner organizations such as the Chinese Neuroscience Society (CNS), Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS), International Brain Research Organization (IBRO), and Japan Neuroscience Society (JNS), as well as the Trainee Professional Development Awardees (TPDA). This event consolidates multiple historical events: the Diversity Poster Session, the ECPA Poster Session, the FUN Poster Session, the International Fellows Poster Session, and the TPDA Poster Session.

Career Development Topics: A Networking Event

Experienced neuroscientists will answer attendee questions on a wide range of topics at this informal, roundtable event. Topics include work-life balance, securing grants, setting up a lab, choosing a postdoctoral position, and careers outside of academia, among others. The event will offer nearly 30 tables. Attendees will have the opportunity to rotate among the tables that are of interest to them. Neuroscientists at all career stages are encouraged to attend.

Animals in biomedical research are indispensable for translational breakthroughs in neuroscience, paving the way for innovative treatments and real-world applications for humans. Explore these breakthroughs through the lens of a patient with spinal muscular atrophy who is alive today because of treatment only made possible through animal research.

The Advocacy Forum: From Awareness to Action: The Role of Advocacy in Advancing Addiction Research and Policies 

Addiction and substance use can affect people anywhere, anytime, at any age and continues to be a major crisis across the world. Discover firsthand the latest addiction research, the role advocacy has in influencing policy decisions, and how to play a role in leading that change and amplifying the voices of those affected by addiction. 

The Future of Scientific Publishing

Scientific publishing has evolved significantly over even just the last decade: preprints are increasingly commonplace; innovations like double-anonymous review and post-publication commenting are reshaping peer review; and the rise of open access makes it easier than ever for the public to access research reports. Even after publication, the emergence of social media, video, and podcasts as platforms to share findings has changed the role of individual researchers in publicizing their science. This session will cover some of these new models and what researchers need to understand about this complex, changing landscape. How can they take advantage of these changes, either to maximize the dissemination of research or to find reputable papers? What potential changes are on the horizon that may further influence journal publication or scientific communications?
