Sponsored By: National Institutes of Health
The annual 2024 NIDA-NIAAA Frontiers in Addiction Research Mini-Convention is joint event organized by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) Neuroscience Workgroup. The 2024 Mini-Convention will be held on October 4, 2024, from 8am-5pm ET. The annual NIDA-NIAAA Mini-Convention provides a forum for presentations and discussions of current topics in neuroscience and addiction research. Topics of significant or emerging scientific interest were presented as mini-symposia that describe current knowledge and the use of state-of-the-art approaches in pursuing research in select topic areas, and that enable additional discussion of the implications of the research. The Mini-Convention also showcases research by premier early stage and junior investigators working in the fields of alcohol and substance abuse and addiction research through the Early Career Investigator Showcase (ECIS) symposium. The highlight of the Mini-Convention is the keynote address presented by the recipient of the annual Jacob P. Waletzky Memorial Award. The Jacob P. Waletzky Award is given to a young scientist (within 15 years of his/her Ph.D. or MD degree) whose independent research has led to significant conceptual and empirical contributions to the understanding of drug addiction.

Neuroscience & Spirituality Social
Date & Time: Saturday, October 05, 7–10 a.m.
Sponsor Category: Individual Group
Sponsored By: Mona Sobhani, Allison Paradise
This informal gathering is for anyone who has ever had an experience -- whether they classify it as 'spiritual' or not -- that they cannot explain with our current understanding of science. Our scientific community tends to dismiss these events as anomalies, declare them as 'not real', or ignore them altogether, in spite of the fact that many scientists have experienced these phenomena. Join a growing group of curious scientists who are unafraid to ask difficult questions about the nature of our reality that includes the intersection of science and spirituality. Join us in a conversation about our shared experiences and how we might begin to understand them.

The Minis Search is a new Event Detection in the Axon pCLAMP 11 Software
Date & Time: Monday, October 07, 6:30–7:30 p.m.
Sponsor Category: Commercial
Sponsored By: Molecular Devices
This search is particularly designed to analyze spontaneous or miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (sEPCS or mEPSCs) and spontaneous or miniature inhibitory postsynaptic currents (sIPCS or mIPSCs) . It provides a streamlined workflow in detecting minis events acquired in a continuous or episodic-sweep mode. In addition, it enables accurate measurements on detected events and simplifies the process of event addition and deletion. Overall, this comprehensive analysis allows neuroscientists to analyze minis events in an easier, faster, and more accurate way.

Workshop: Simulating Embodied Neural Control using NeuroMechFly
Date & Time: Monday, October 07, 6:30–8:30 p.m.
Sponsor Category: University/Non-Profit
Sponsored By: Pavan Ramdya
Neuromechanical models can be used to test the degree to which we understand the mechanisms underlying organismic behavior. Particularly exciting are models of the fly, Drosophila melanogaster, a genetically-tractable animal with complex behaviors and a small number of identifiable neurons. This workshop will teach attendees to use NeuroMechFly, a whole-organism physics simulation of adult Drosophila (Lobato-Rios et al. Nature Methods 2022; www.neuromechfly.org).

ALBA-IBRO Social for Diversity & Inclusion in Neuroscience
Date & Time: Tuesday, October 08, 6:30–8:30 p.m.
Sponsor Category: University/Non-Profit
Sponsored By: IBRO, SfN, FENS and ALBA Network
Let's come together to celebrate the progress made in promoting diversity and inclusion in brain research over the past year.
At this year's social gathering, the ALBA Network aims to shed light on the challenges faced by postdoctoral researchers. Factors such as a lack of work-life balance, demanding deliverables coupled with financial constraints, and job insecurity significantly impact their professional journeys, leading many exceptional scientists to reconsider a career within academia. Our keynote address will delve into the dynamics of this so-called "postdoc crisis", setting the stage for an engaging discussion with the audience on strategies to cultivate more supportive and sustainable environments.
Following the discussion, we invite attendees to network over snacks and drinks.
This event is organised with the support of the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO), a founding partner of the ALBA Network, along with FENS and SfN.
