As emphasized by SfN pres. Dr. Ann Young in the Spring 2004 Neuroscience Qtr., public education is one of 4 cornerstones of SfN's strategic plan. Having a neuroscience presence at teacher meetings including National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) & National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) is a way to accomplish this goal. Representatives from Comm. on Animals in Research and Comm. on Neuroscience Literacy (CNL) attended the 2003 NSTA meeting and expressed concern about the quality and accuracy of neuroscience content presented. Local chapter participation was enlisted in a national effort to expand upon neuroscience offerings for teachers. At the 2004 NSTA meeting, SfN's CNL partnered with neuroscientists from the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience (CBN) and Atlanta Chap. of SfN to provide accurate & relevant neuroscience content to teachers nationwide. An SfN booth in the vendor exhibits facilitated distribution of educational materials such as Brain Facts, Brain Briefings, and CD & web-based resources. Furthermore, the booth highlighted presentations by SfN members at the meeting. Stuart Zola was sponsored by SfN to speak on Memory Abilities in Teachers and Students: How They Differ. Atlanta-based CBN, and Institute for Biomedical Philosophy sponsored presentations about gender differences in learning and the use of marine & invertebrate models for teaching standards based biology. NSTA and NABT meetings are annual events held in various locations each year. Involvement of local neuroscientists at these meetings is one important mechanism for SfN members and chapters to contribute to national goals of SfN.
