NIH to Significantly Reduce the Use of Chimpanzees in Research
Jul 01, 2013
NIH Director Francis Collins announced on June 26 that NIH plans to substantially reduce the use of chimpanzees in NIH-funded biomedical research and retire most of the chimpanzees it currently owns or supports. NIH has accepted most of the recommendations of an independent advisory council for implementing new principles and criteria defined by the Institute of Medicine for the use of chimpanzees. A press release on the NIH website outlines the NIH’s plans.
