U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Proposing to List All Chimpanzees as Endangered
Aug 12, 2013
On June 12, 2013 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) announced a proposal to list all chimpanzees as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Currently, only wild chimpanzees are listed as endangered while captive chimpanzees are listed as threatened. Public comments on the proposed rule were considered by FWS until August 12, 2013. SfN submitted comments that focused on countering the claim that the ESA does not allow for captive-held chimpanzees to be assigned a separate legal status from their wild counterparts and the impact such a rule would have on biomedical research.
