Tips for Poster Presenters
As a poster presenter or a speaker at Neuroscience 2014, you will be one of more than 15,000 researchers presenting excellent science to nearly 30,000 neuroscience researchers, clinicians, and advocates from around the world. Be prepared to effectively communicate your science by following these general presentation tips:
- Have a Clear Purpose: An effective presentation has a main point. Rather than a collection of data, improve your presentation by clearly displaying a central theme.
- Communicate Digestible Information: Excess and nonessential information can confuse an audience. Use language and information that is understandable to researchers from outside your field. Extra information can be incorporated if there are more specific questions.
- Graphic Format: Rather than emphasizing precise numerical values in charts, use graphs that show qualitative relationships. Images should support the central theme of your poster presentation.
- Clear Train of Thought: When presenting research, your ideas and images should flow in a logical sequence, without going on irrelevant tangents or getting bogged down in details. Your presentation should support the paper’s central thesis.
Practice your presentation before hitting the floor in the Speaker Ready Room. Dynamic poster presenters, lecturers, and other speakers should check their media, slide shows, and graphics in advance to ensure the files are compatible with the session room computers. The Speaker Ready Room is in the Washington Convention Center, room 209C, and will be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, November 14, through Wednesday, November 19.
Taking Care of Posters
The Society for Neuroscience has a discount price for presenters wanting to print their poster in Washington, DC. The Capital Business Center is a full-service company located on the first floor in the main lobby of the convention center. It offers poster printing, copying, mailing, faxing, and other services for attendees.
After your poster presentation session ends, remember to remove your poster from the floor. Otherwise, it will be thrown away.
